Taxi fares and meter rates in Hungary, 2026.

Hungary regulates taxi tariffs by decree — every licensed taxi in Budapest runs the same meter rates. Here's what you should see on the meter and in the invoice.

Regulated Budapest tariff

Budapest taxis operate a three-part meter: a base fare when the meter starts, a per-kilometre rate while driving, and a per-minute rate while waiting. The rates are set by the city and updated periodically — as of early 2026, expect roughly 1,100 HUF base + 440 HUF/km + 110 HUF/min.

Airport fixed fares

Főtaxi, the licensed operator at Budapest Airport, offers a regulated fixed airport-to-city tariff. Expect around 9,000–11,000 HUF depending on destination zone. Ask for the voucher at the yellow rank outside arrivals.

App pricing

Bolt and Uber show upfront fares in the app rather than running a meter. During peak demand (Friday evenings, race weekends, New Year's Eve) surge multipliers apply. Pickup Hungary and other pre-booked providers quote a fixed all-in price up front.

Tipping

Tipping is customary but not automatic. 10% is normal for metered taxis; for pre-booked transfers you typically round up or add a few thousand forints for excellent service.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a single national tariff?

No — Budapest has a city-set meter tariff that most surrounding areas follow, but rural taxis operate independently with their own rates.

Can I pay by card?

Yes. Főtaxi, City Taxi, and most dispatch companies accept card payments; Bolt and Uber are app-only. Keep some cash for tipping if you want.

Are the rates posted in the car?

Yes — licensed Budapest taxis must display the tariff in the vehicle, usually on the passenger window. If you don't see one, it's not a licensed taxi.
